Presence

I am consciously choosing to be more present We do so many things out of habit, out of necessity, we engage in many activities in our days without conscious thought.

When I am able to be present, I re-center, I feel calmer, and I notice my experience of my life changes.

I encourage you to take an hour today – a few minutes – or choose one activity then stop and check in how it feels.

If you are eating — how does the food taste? smell? do you like the texture? the temperature? Are you sitting? Is there a table? How does the utensil feel? Is there sound?

Notice all of your senses and really tune in.

What do you see? smell? hear? feel? taste? What sensations do you notice in your body?

Is anyone with you? What do you notice about being with this person/people?

This is a great exercise to practice throughout the day, when we feel stressed, when our mind starts to go down a rabbit hole, when we notice we are on auto-pilot. It helps shift our focus, quiet the mind. It also helps us see if we are choosing things unconsciously, out of habit, necessity…or are these things we are doing because we really enjoy them?

This kind of present attention can also take a mundane task we don’t enjoy…and help bring some new energy to it and make the experience new for us.

Feel free to share any experiences you have in the comments.

  1. Thank you for reminding me to be more present. I’m out of the past and the future hasn’t happened yet, so the present is all I have.
